Because your pain is more than physical - and your healing should be too.

If you’re navigating pelvic pain, overactive pelvic floor dysfunction, or conditions like Lichen Sclerosus, you probably know by now: it’s not just about the body. It’s emotional. Mental. Energetic. Spiritual.

That’s why today we’re kicking off the Chakras & Pelvic Pain series - starting at the base of it all:

The Root Chakra

What is the Root Chakra?

The Root Chakra (Muladhara) is the first of the seven main chakras, located at the base of the spine - more specifically, at the perineum (the space between your vaginal and anal opening). This area is part of your pelvic floor, which makes the Root Chakra a powerful energetic center to explore when healing pelvic pain.

Why the Root Chakra Matters for Pelvic Pain

Here are a few reasons this chakra is key:

  1. Overactive pelvic floor dysfunction: If your pelvic floor holds chronic tension and struggles to relax, it mirrors the qualities of a blocked Root Chakra - tight, guarded, disconnected from safety.

  2. Vulvar conditions like Lichen Sclerosus: When we experience recurring tears or trauma to the perineal area, it’s not just physical. That region may begin to feel unsafe, vulnerable, or like it needs constant protection - and your Root Chakra feels that.

Ask yourself: How might your body’s protection patterns be mirrored energetically? How does a blocked Root Chakra perhaps contribute to my pelvic pain? What might your Root Chakra be trying to say?

Breathe Into Your Root

In Pelvic Floor Yoga, we often practice breathing into the perineum - because your pelvic floor wants to move with your breath, but this is also Root Chakra work in action. When your pelvic floor is overactive, that natural downward movement with the inhale might be restricted, creating less movement in that part of your body.

With this you might feel:

  • Tension or guarding

  • A lack of movement in the pelvic floor

  • A sense of disconnect from that part of your body

And if that sounds familiar, please don’t worry - this is what we work on in this space! You can learn more about breathing into your pelvic floor in this blog post or come practice with me in the Pelvic Health Yoga Membership - your safe, consistent space for ongoing support.

Root Chakra Basics:

Color: Red

Element: Earth

Themes: Safety, security, grounding, support, presence

Physical areas: Feet, legs, perineum, rectum, large intestines, adrenal glands.

When your Root Chakra is blocked, you might experience:

  • Pain or dysfunction in the pelvic region

  • Fear, anxiety, or hypervigilance

  • Feeling unsafe or ungrounded in your body

  • A lack of trust in yourself or others

Remember: blocked energy in one chakra can affect the whole system - because energy wants to flow upward, like a river moving through your spine.

🌿 How to Reconnect with Your Root Chakra

Grounding doesn’t have to be complex. Here are simple ways to nourish this energy center:

✔️ Walk barefoot (bonus: it’s amazing for pelvic health!) ✔️ Meditate with grounding visualizations ✔️ Breathe into your perineum ✔️ Use grounding essential oils (like vetiver or patchouli) ✔️ Practice yoga postures like:

  • Child’s Pose

  • Low Lunge

  • Mountain Pose

  • Seated forward folds

✔️ Try myofascial release for your feet (your feet are also connected to your pelvis) ✔️ Pay attention to how you stand — are you rooted?

Try This Right Now:

  1. Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat

  2. Lift your toes, then slowly place them down one by one

  3. Feel the connection with the ground

  4. Place your hands on your lower belly and breathe softly into your hands

  5. Can you invite that breath down into your perineum?

  6. Notice: how does your body respond?

Root Chakra Affirmation

I feel supported by the ground beneath me.

Say it aloud. Whisper it. Write it down. Let it land.

Tell me in the comments:

What helps you feel grounded and safe in your body? Have you worked with your Root Chakra before?

Let’s talk about it - because pelvic healing doesn’t have to be lonely.
